The Federal Trade Commission, Your Funeral Home, and You
Beginning in the 1980's, the Federal Trade Commission began regulating
funeral home activities. This action was taken because there had been many
cases reported in which the consumer (the family of the deceased) was not
given the opportunity to "itemize" their funeral service purchase. Many
funeral homes offered only package funeral services, in which the family
might have to pay for items of service or merchandise they did not need or
want.
Federal law now requires that all funeral homes in the United States
adhere to the FTC's "Funeral Rule." The funeral rule requires full disclosure
of all prices before any discussion of purchase begins, and it applies to
caskets, outer burial containers (vaults) and the services of the funeral
director and staff.
The funeral rule also requires disclosure of facts that
the family might not know, such as the fact that embalming is not required
by law, except in certain circumstances. Pine Rest Funeral Home is happy to
comply with the funeral rule, since it's requirements are fair to both the
consumer and the funeral home.
